Jewelry has played a major role in our history, our world and our lives, from Gold and Rubies, Sapphires, Emeralds and Diamonds decorating the shields of men in battle, to the Silver and Mystic Topaz, Amethyst, and Peridot that decorate men and women of today. There have been gemstones that are fraudulant, once being believed to be one kind of rare stone when in fact it was totally different. One of the famous frauds in history is The Black Prince's Ruby. At 145cts it was found not to be a Ruby at all but a Red Spinel. And many of Queen Cleopatra's Emeralds were actually Peridots.

Today gemstones are found in a variety of ways the more popular being faceted but gaining popularity are the cabachons. Faceted gems are cut in ways to allow the light to pass through a multitude of ways making them sparkle. Every year there seems to be more ways to cut gemstones to allow the most light through, from the popular Diamond cut to the more fancy cuts such as a Quantum cut.

Whatever your taste in gemstones or color you can be pretty sure to find it. Mystic Topaz is getting more popular all the time, bringing us colors that span the rainbow! Amethyst comes in a range of colors also from a light lilac also called Rose de France to the deep dark purple of the African Amethyst with flashes of red. Lets not forget about the ones you won't find in any retail store. A personal favorite is Danburite which was originally found in Danbrite Conneticut. It has amazing brilliance and is found a light yellow to clear.

Many of these gemstones are set in Gold and .925 Sterling Silver. Gold is hallmarked in the US as either 10kt Gold, 14kt Gold or 18kt Gold. You will also find Gold Plated which is Sterling Silver plated with 22kt Gold. One little known fact is that Sterling Silver is indeed a precious metal. As a matter of fact the value of Sterling Silver has risen quite a bit just this year. Some Sterling Silver jewelry is Rhodium plated to prevent tarnishing. Rhodium is also a metal that is considered precious.

In every country and in every part of history you will find men and women that have adorned themselves in jewellery made from precious and semiprecious gemstones, worn as pendants, necklaces, earrings, bracelets, earrings and probably the most popular of all, rings. Some stones, especially semiprecious ones, are worked into beads. Precious metal chains, either Sterling Silver or Gold are also worn. Used as tokens of love, accents to beauty and signs of economical class, jewelry has driven countries to war, lovers together and shaped our history and our world.
